Lower Primary

LIFELONG LEARNING

TSS is a community that involves children, their families and caregivers in a warm, caring and supportive environment. In Lower Primary, we continue the learning journey started in Kindergarten. We help children develop their skills of independence and interdependence. Guiding them in not just what they learn but how to learn.

We aim to build a partnership with parents through on-going communication and a commitment to providing the best kind of care for your children. We encourage your support in this endeavour and look forward to building a positive relationship with you and your child.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Our learning environment is carefully prepared and supports children’s development. We recognise that children learn through interaction with their environment and the people around them. We provide children with the support of trusted adults, who actively engage with them and are interested in their learning.

In Lower Primary, our staff are well qualified and are experienced in teaching children of this age. Teaching staff are supported by our Teaching Assistants (TAs) who support learning within the Lower Primary classrooms.

THE LOWER PRIMARY CURRICULUM

Our Lower Primary department consists of Years One to Two where the children follow a programme in both Arabic and English designed to build a secure foundation for their learning throughout the school and beyond. Our eight well-resourced Lower Primary classrooms are grouped in a dedicated building with access to specialist Art, ICT and Music rooms and a wide range of PE facilities. Each teacher and her assistant teach a group of up to twenty two children.

Learning in Lower Primary at The Sultan’s School is based on the Cambridge Curriculum and the Omani National education programme. These areas of learning included in the program are:

  • Arabic Language
  • Islamic Studies
  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Information, Communication and Technology (ICT)
  • Music
  • Art & Design
  • Physical Education (PE)

Children in Lower Primary are taught in class based groups by an Arabic or English Homeroom teacher for Arabic Language, Islamic Studies, English, Maths and Science.

Children are taught by specialist teachers in the areas of ICT, Music, Art & Design and PE.

Children develop and learn at different rates and, although development occurs in a predictable sequence, each individual develops at their own pace. However, staff strive to motivate children in their learning by working with them to achieve their potential.

ASSESSMENT AND PLANNING

When planning activities, staff aim to value and build on what children already know, to develop each child’s curiosity and interest. Teachers provide first hand experiences through interaction with real objects and materials as well as using more secondary sources of information and more abstract concepts as the children get older.

Wherever possible, teachers will link learning through an integrated approach or through units of enquiry. This gives children a better sense of how skills learnt in one area can be applied across other areas of the curriculum.

The children are assessed both formally and informally. Day to day assessments through observations, responses to questions and reviewing and marking work allows teachers to plan and adapt planning to better suit the needs of the class. Formal assessment tests and tasks provide a summary of what a child has learnt.

Children are assessed formally on a regular basis in both Arabic and English subjects. These assessments are moderated and are assigned an 1-7 assessment grade based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) grading scale.
