The Sultan’s School has recently earned the prestigious International Green Flag Award, being the only school in Oman to do so. It has achieved this accolade through the tireless efforts of its Eco-club, whose motto is “Our dream: keep Oman green”. Eco-club members across the whole school are driving initiatives to reduce waste, conserve water, recycle materials and food waste, but most importantly we are implementing education initiatives to promote awareness of environmental issues.
One such initiative was through our collaboration with artist and president of G cubes Harald Reichenbach. This project allowed our students to create a worthwhile end-product from their regular beach-clean activities at our local beach in Seeb. Students have for many years been volunteering their time and efforts to carry out litter picking and beach clean-up operations in this area, chatting with people in the local community about the dangers of plastic pollution and the importance of finding local solutions to global problems. When our paths crossed with Harald the opportunity to develop these activities into something with a globally significant outlook was irresistible.
We are looking forward to working with a wide range of people over the next few years to turn the school’s eco-club motto into a reality!
